Charter Day redux ON JANUARY 25, the University observed Charter Day for the first time in thirty-three years. The celebration, attended by a crowd of three hundred in the Cox Hall ballroom, marked the eighty-fourth anniversary of the day Emory was granted its charter in DeKalb County in 1915. Among the revelers was President William M. Chace, who closed the observance with the ceremonial lighting of the four-tiered Charter Day cake. The banquet capped a series of events that included a student-led torchlight procession through campus and day-long activities in the Coca-Cola Commons. Charter Day was observed annually until 1966, and its resurrection is a University tradition Chace plans to observe annually.
