Brand New Day: Emory's 172nd Commencement ceremony on May 8 celebrated 4,615 graduates and a record total of 4,700 degrees (happily that's academic, not Fahrenheit).
It was the first led by President Claire E. Sterk who praised "the transformative power of liberal arts, backed by the powerful force of a major research university."
Speaker Natasha Trethewey, former US poet Laureate and Robert W. Woodruff professor of English and Creative Writing, had some parting words: "When you leave here today, continue the work to ennoble your soul," she urged. "Find a way to live in a world that by your actions serves the greater good."
