Trading oral care for moral care We think it was the Holy Spirit at work, bringing us together,” says RALEIGH H. WATSON ’61D of the 1996 reunion of Emory’s School of Dentistry Class of 1961 that reunited him with classmate HENRY B. PATTERSON ’61D.
At the time of the reunion, Watson was about to become a perpetual deacon in the Episcopal Church. (In the Episcopal hierarchy, perpetual deacons serve just below ordained ministers.) “I had felt a kind of a call for many years,” Watson says, “and I’d been involved in our congregation since becoming a lay reader in 1970.” At the reunion, Watson noticed that Patterson was wearing an Episcopal Church lapel pin. As the two men talked, each learned of the other’s desire to lead their congregations—Watson in Winchester, Virginia, and Patterson in Durham, North Carolina. “Our paths had crossed a few times since graduating, but we never knew of our mutual feeling or a call to the ministry,” says Watson, who urged Patterson also to become a perpetual deacon. Today, Watson is deacon-in-charge of the Anglican Church of St. Michael the Archangel in Winchester while continuing to practice dentistry. Patterson, who recently retired from his dental practice, now leads St. Mark’s Church in Durham. “This really is just another example of the mysterious ways that God chooses to perform his miracles here on Earth,” Patterson says.—G.F.
