Extreme Mascot Makeover: Swoop Edition

When students returned to roost at Emory’s campuses this fall, they were welcomed by the sight of a familiar bird with a bold new look. Swoop, the university’s high-flying Eagle mascot, debuted his eye-catching glow-up during Emory’s Weeks of Welcome events — student move-in, pep rallies, Gate Crossing, College Colors Day, Song Fest and more — at both the Atlanta and Oxford campuses. From the moment Swoop landed on the scene, students rushed in for selfies and high-fives, eager to celebrate his striking makeover.

Earlier this year, the university recognized Swoop’s plumage was ready for a refresh and seized the chance to not only update his appearance, but also unify it across both campuses. Notably, Swoop’s gaze was sharpened. His eyes are now fierce enough to ruffle the competition, yet still friendly enough to appeal to his youngest fans. More important, the mascot’s costume boasts two brand new fits — shirts that display the Emory and Oxford logos proudly and help distinguish between Swoop’s primary nesting grounds.

Students overwhelmingly approved of Swoop’s fresh feathers.

“The new Swoop is absolutely incredible,” says student Dani Sligh 26Ox 28C. “It’s a perfect representation of our school spirit and pride. He will be such an inspiration to all athletes, students, faculty, staff and the Emory and Oxford communities.”

And this Eagle’s calendar is packed with public appearances. He’s already cheered on racers at the Winship 5K, rallied crowds at sporting events and greeted alumni at Emory Homecoming and Family Weekend. And there will be plenty more chances to spot him — the new-and-improved Swoop will continue spreading his wings and enthusiasm at upcoming events across both campuses.

More than just a new costume, Swoop’s makeover reflects the enduring pride of Eagle Nation and the traditions that unite students, alumni and the greater Emory community. With a renewed look and spirit, he’s ready to soar into the rest of the academic year ahead.
