Sharing the Health
Brittain Award winner focused on accessible care
A native of Monroe, Georgia, Arun Mohan 06MBA 07MD is the son of immigrants who became successful in the U.S. But he has never taken privilege for granted.
“My dad tells the story that he came to this country with a suitcase of clothes and nine dollars in his pocket,” Mohan says. “But that doesn’t tell the whole story. He also came here with a medical education and good health. I want people to have access to the same opportunities I have had, and the way I see to do that is through health care.”
Since entering Emory in 2001 to earn dual business and medical degrees, Mohan has founded several nonprofit and advocacy organizations, including HealthSTAT (Health Students Taking Action Together), a statewide coalition dedicated to bringing students together in service to their communities and as advocates for their patients. He also has served as a director of Georgians for a Common Sense Health Plan and was the first-ever student director of the American Medical Association Foundation.
At Commencement this year, Mohan received Emory’s highest student honor, the Marion Luther Brittain Award, presented to a graduate who has demonstrated exemplary service to both the University and the greater community without expectation of recognition.
“I grew up a lot here,” Mohan says. “Emory helped me better understand my values and goals and gave me the support to put those plans in place. Everything I do is because I love it and I’m passionate about it.”
