The half-tuition scholarship goes to a student who, according to Mrs. Edwards, "becomes an integral part of campus life through participating in school activities and who encourages others to do so in the spirit of teamwork." In his three months at Oxford, Brad Edwards had made many friends, joined several campus organizations, and was planning to participate in Leadership Oxford training the following spring. "He lived life to the fullest," Mrs. Edwards adds.
Likewise, Davenport has become deeply involved in life at Oxford. He is currently vice president of the Student Government Association and directs the Interclub Council. He is also a member of Oxford Fellowship and is active in programs at Allen Memorial United Methodist Church in Oxford. During his freshman year, Davenport was a member of the freshman council and participated in an alternative spring break work project in Nashville.
"Wil's concern for his fellow students and his leadership potential distinguish him among the nominees," says William H. Murdy, dean of Oxford College. "The selection committee and I feel that [he] best exhibits the qualities that Mr. and Mrs. Edwards were trying to celebrate and reinforce in the student body as a whole."
