Students new to Emory this fall are finding their way around a campus that is considerably different from the one the Class of 1999 left behind in May. Most noticeably, there are fewer cars, less concrete, and more green spaces and walkways. There are also several new buildings under construction on Emory’s main campus, some of which are highlighted here.

The Miller-Ward Alumni Center
Alumni returning to campus next year will be able to visit this twenty-three-thousand-square-foot, Tudor-style building, located on Houston Mill Road adjacent to the Houston Mill House. Named for Dean of Alumni JUDSON “JAKE” WARD ’33C-’36G and the late H. PRENTICE MILLER ’27C-’28G, the center is scheduled for completion this March.

The Donna and Marvin Schwartz Center for the Performing Arts
Named in honor of alumna DONNA KEESLER SCHWARTZ ’62C and her husband, Marvin, who together contributed $8 million for the project, the center will provide new classroom space for the performing arts, as well as an eight-hundred-seat concert hall, a rehearsal hall, ensemble space, theater lab, and dance studio. The building, to be located at the corner of North Decatur and Clifton roads, is scheduled for completion in May 2002.

Cherry Logan Emerson Hall
The first of the two-phase Science 2000 construction project, this five-story building located next to White Hall is scheduled for completion in December 2000. Named for CHERRY L. EMERSON ’38C-’39G, a notable scientist and a major supporter of EmoryÕs music programs, the building will house the materials and biomolecular chemistry programs, a scientific computing center, and a physical sciences library.

Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing
A new home for nursing students and faculty is underway at the corner of Clifton Road and Michael Street. Designed in the traditional architectural style of the buildings on the Quadrangle, the one-hundred-thousand-square-foot building will house classrooms, nursing simulation labs, research project space, a 160-seat auditorium, and a 140-seat case-study lecture hall. Completion of the project is scheduled for January 2001.

The Whitehead Research Building
This eight-story biomedical research facility is under construction on Michael Street adjacent to the Rollins Research Center. Scheduled for completion in August 2001, the building will house the anatomy, cell biology, and physiology departments.

Oxford College performing arts venues
Oxford College is expanding and renovating Williams Gymnasium and Few Hall to provide venues for the performing arts. The refurbishment of Williams Gym, which already houses dance and athletics classes, will create new space for classrooms and dance and music performances. An addition to Few Hall will house a 120-seat theater, scene shop, lobby and ticket office, and rehearsal space.—S.P.
