Remembering Two Emory Sportsmen
Clyde Partin 50C 51G and Ernie Harwell 40C
Emory’s Clyde “Doc” Partin 50C 51G was a familiar and beloved figure at the University for more than a half-century, working in the athletics department in positions including athletics director and chair of the Health and Physical Education Department. Partin died in 2009 at eighty-four, but his legacy continues in countless ways, such as his book on Emory sports, Athletics for All; the endowed Clyde Partin Sr. Director of Athletics position; and the recent donation of his papers to Emory’s Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library.

Baseball announcer Ernie Harwell 40C was the voice of the Detroit Tigers for many years, helping legions of fans envision every play as he saw it happen. His kind spirit and easygoing Southern manner were noted by dozens of elected officials and baseball greats when he died of cancer in May at ninety-two. Harwell, a Georgia native who was editor of the Emory Wheel as a student, received the Ford C. Frick award for announcing from the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981. The Tigers’ home stadium, Comerica Park, is home to a life-size statue of him.
